SOPHOMORES HAVE UNIQUE PARTY THE WEATHER MAN , GETS DISAGREEABLE The weather man in looking over his record for this winter decided that he had been too lenient with the High Pointers. Therefore he got busy and put the high school system on the ‘:‘blink” Monday, • February 5, when the predicted cold wave struck High Point,- accompanied by rain, hail and snow. When Johnnie or Mary woke up Monday and saw the weather outside they said as they turned over under the warm covers. “O, well, they real ly can’t expect me to be at school to day.” Therefore there were 65 ab sences in the high school Monday— more than there has been any one day this year. “We ‘auto’ have a good time at our ‘auto’ party and you. ‘auto’ come,” was the unusual invitation which took a good many students of room 26 to the “Y” hut Friday night, February 2, at 7:30 o’clock. During the evening the “automo bile” idea was used in the contests and games, the most interesting of which were “changing the tire,” “fill ing, the radiator,” and “putting up the side curtains.” In “changing the tire” two boys removed their coats, collar, and ties and raced to see »/hich one could put them on more quickly; in “filling the radiator” a girl and a boy against a girl amt a boy, the girl . fed the boy a glass of water with a ■ teaspoon, the one drinking the ^lass! empty , first being the winner; \vhen they went to put up the “side cur- ' tains”, an auto, was fastened to the », wall and the people takings part, in,,, this contest were blind'-folded Jand ' one getting the curtains nearest to , the place that they belonged was the ; winner. ’ ' " The refre.shments also carried out:,, the automobile idea, being a picnic.' supper consisting of sandwiches and lemonade. The favors were original, being life savers, to which were tied cards bearing “We hope you had a good time at our ‘blow-out’ and that you ‘re-tire’ feeling fine.” «.qiiiuy, iBgram shot a foul, making the score 1-0 i n favor of High Point. But it was not to be this way for long because Fag- gart shot three fouls and a field goal. Ragan then dropped in a goal from near the center of tne floor, making the score 5-3 in favor of Salisbury. At this juncture Lyon, Salisbury’s captain, seemed to wake up and he dropped ■’■in four field goals in rapid succession. The half ended with the score standing 13-3 in Salisbury’s - favoiv In the second half both teams play ed a much better brand of basketball. Both teams seemed to have a reju venated spirit and played much fa.ster basketball, In this period Salisbury scored 20 points to High Point’s 7. The stars of the game were Lyon and Burke, of Salisbury, and Ragan, of High Point. Ragan was the only player on the High Point quint that was able to secure a field goal. BETTER SPEECH WEEK Better Spech W’eek! February 19- 24 will be better spech week in High Point high school. This is a week which should mean a great deal to all of us, and it is a matter which all of us should push to the front. Just think what better speech means, in .school it means better recitations, beter grades and a fuller, more en joyable school life. Out in life it means a better position, better pay, and a life which i.s more mseful to both yourself and others. As a rule, wheenver we plan to do a thing in old Hj P. H. S., we put it over the top iq a splendid way, and we do noot iwant to be accused of being slackers in anything,, and especially in .such a . thing as better speech. So, let’s every body put some pep in it; get the spirit of the work; be a sport; and make every corridor of this old , budding ring with better speech. Let’s observe this better speech week in a way that it will make such a lasting impres sion upon us that not only this one week will be better speech week, but every week in the year.
